Kate: May be we should introduce ourselves properly. I m a doctor, dedicated1 to curing the sick. At least, trying to.
Alex: I m an architect. I like to build. And while I wouldn t say my current project is ideal2...it allows me to be here, in this place, and that s enough for now. But tell me something. If you re working in a hospital in Chicago now, where were you before, in my time?
Kate: Two years ago, in your time I was working in internal3 medicine in Madison.
Alex: Tell me about the future. What s it like in the year 2006?
Kate: I m afraid the world s pretty much the same. Of course, we all dress in shiny metal jump suits and drive flying cars and no one talks anymore because we can read each other s minds. But the truth is, man from the past not much has really changed in 2006. Speaking of the past, though, I ve been thinking about the paw4 prints. How is that possible?
Alex: Well, I think we have the same dog.
Kate: Oh, yeah? What s yours like? According to the vet5, mine is eight years old in my time, six in yours. She s skinny, has sad eyes, snores, and sleeps like a person. I don t know why, but I call her Jack6.
Alex: Hello, Jack.
Kate: Hey. What are you doing? You re supposed to be asleep.
Patient girl: Is she gonna marry him?
Kate: What do you think?
Patient girl: I don t know. He s kind of old.
Kate: Okay, he s not that old.
Patient girl: My mom s last boyfriend was bald. He was nice, but my mom didn t marry him.
Kate: No?
Patient girl: "There s always something better coming around the corner ." That s what she says. May be that s what that lady should do. Wait for something better to come around the corner.
Kate: Maybe. But if she s not careful, she could spend her whole life waiting.
妙词佳句,活学活用

这个词本身作为形容词的时候意思是“专注的,献身的”,例如:

He dedicated the book to wife. 他把这本书献给他的妻子。
2. Be supposed to do something.
这也应该是一个大家熟悉的表达,意思是 “应该做……”,例如:

表示“将要到来”,是一个习语,但是它的本义是“在拐角处”,有时候也引申为“随处可见”。e.g.:
